Reverse Osmosis Filtration: Why Should I Invest In It?

Reverse Osmosis Filtration: Why Should I Invest In It?

What is Reverse Osmosis Filtration?

Reverse osmosis is a water purification process that eliminates unwanted molecules, contaminants and sediments from drinking water. It does this through a semipermeable membrane—a membrane that only allows certain substances to pass through (in this case water). Let’s break down reverse osmosis filtration below, including how it works and if it’s the best fit for your home or business.

How Does Reverse Osmosis Filtration Work?

Pressure forces water through a synthetic membrane with microscopic pores. These pores remove any unwanted particles and microorganisms that may make you sick when ingested.  Then, pressure prevents this purified water from filtering back into the contaminated water.

Benefits and Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis Filtration

Reverse osmosis water provides a clean, safe way to purify drinking water. It’s no wonder then why an increasing number of homeowners are installing personal filtration systems in their homes.

Benefits

The main benefit of reverse osmosis is that it filters almost all water contaminants, including high concern ones such as PFAs and GenX. Water that’s stripped down to a molecular level leaves no traces of silica, chemicals, heavy metals and other contaminants, either. This makes mineral-less water especially great to use for cooking, or for fish owners with saltwater aquariums. Plus, installing a RO system significantly reduces the need for bottled water, lessening your impact on the environment.

Disadvantages

One of the biggest criticisms of RO systems is the yearly maintenance they require (thankfully, Kinetico can help with this). They also remove minerals that balance your water’s pH balance, which can eventually lead to other problems if not monitored. Even considering these points, though, RO is still the best solution for treating the majority of water contaminants.

Do I Need a Reverse Osmosis Filtration System?

Emerging contaminants are becoming an increasing concern to government agencies like the EPA, especially when considering the impact they have on our water sources. Because levels of contaminants can vary by region, and your water company may lack the resources needed to treat them, it’s best to have an added level of filtration in your home via a RO system.
