Commercial Water Filtration for Engineers
If you are responsible for uptime, efficiency, or product quality at your facility, water is a process input you can’t compromise. When its chemistry is wrong for the application, it drives up maintenance costs, shortens equipment life, and eventually shows up as a repair bill, a failed inspection, or unscheduled downtime.
This page is written for the engineers and facilities teams making those decisions. It covers how to characterize your water, how to select filtration and softening media, and how to size a system around your actual flow and contaminant load — then points to the specific Kinetico commercial systems that fit.
Commercial water treatment is not one-size-fits-all, which is why our approach starts with testing. Kinetico Advanced Water Systems runs an in-depth water analysis, defines the problem against your operation, then designs a system around your water. That work is grounded in real water chemistry: our organization is led in part by Dr. Gene Smelik, Jr., Vice President, whose doctoral background in geology and inorganic chemistry — including mitigation of emerging contaminants like VOCs and radionuclides — shapes both our staff training and the systems we specify.
Start with the water, not the catalog
You can’t design a system for water you haven’t characterized. A commercial water analysis sets the baseline every downstream decision depends on. For most facilities that means testing for some combination of:
- Total dissolved solids
- Hardness (grains per gallon)
- pH
- Iron and manganese
- Chlorine and chloramines
- VOCs and disinfection byproducts (THMs, haloacetic acids)
- Facility-specific and emerging contaminants — PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, GenX
- Turbidity
That analysis is the front end of Kinetico’s commercial process: test the water, run a risk assessment against how your facility actually uses it, and then formulate a solution to fit your requirements and budget.
How to select filtration media
Filtration removes contaminants as water passes through the media. The right media depends entirely on what contaminants the analysis identified. Kinetico builds commercial filtration around customized, application specific, high-performance media in static, cartridge, or self-cleaning configurations, matched to the contaminant profile.
| If your water contains | The filtration approach | Notes for specifying |
| Sediment, suspended solids, turbidity — rust, silt, clay, black mica, sand | Sediment filtration | Protects downstream media and equipment from clogging and abrasion. Almost always the required first stage. Backwashing models filter to 5 microns; Enpress configurations remove particulates down to 0.2 microns. Ultrapro models filter down to 0.02 microns. |
| Chlorine, chloramine, THMs, haloacetic acids, VOCs | Chemical filtration (carbon-based) | Removes disinfection chemicals and byproducts. Required upstream of RO — chlorine damages membranes. Recommended upstream of water softeners. Chloramine requires longer contact time than free chlorine; size the bed accordingly. |
| Hardness, dissolved iron and manganese | Softening / ion exchange (not filtration) | Filtration alone won’t address scale-forming hardness. Flag it here so the spec doesn’t stop at filtration. → Commercial softening |
| GenX, PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, emerging contaminants | Specialty filtration | Media must be selected and rated for the specific compound. Confirm third-party performance rating against your target compound and concentration, not just the contaminant class. |
How to size and configure the system
This is where engineering matters. An undersized system fails early; an oversized system wastes capital and floor space. Selection should be driven by testing, not a stock SKU.
Key design considerations:
- Flow rate and peak demand. Size for real peak draw, not average, so treatment holds up under load. Commercial configurations scale from single-tank to multi-tank options; the Hydrus Series supports single or multi-tank arrangements for higher-demand facilities.
- Contaminant type and load. The analysis dictates media selection and staging order.
- Pressure drop across the treatment train. Every stage costs head. Multi-stage designs need the cumulative drop checked against available supply pressure at peak flow — this is the constraint most often missed until startup.
- Industry requirements. Food, healthcare, and manufacturing each carry different water-quality expectations, certifications, redundancy requirements, and documentation burdens.
- Installation footprint. Available space, plumbing, drain access, and service clearance constrain the design.
- Maintenance model. Kinetico commercial filtration uses a dual-tank design that backwashes in clean, treated water, with automated metering for usage-based cleaning or regeneration — which reduces manual intervention, prevents deposition and scale on the internal equipment components, and keeps performance consistent between service visits. Non-electric hydraulic valve operation eliminates motors and control-board failure points.
- Wastewater and conservation goals. Non-electric, twin-tank systems are engineered to minimize water usage, wastewater generation, and utility costs, which minimizes opening costs while assisting with reaching sustainability goals. .
For consulting engineers specifying on a project, Kinetico Advanced Water Systems provides water analysis, risk assessment, submittal support, and custom system design — including applications like process water, humidification systems, HVAC systems, and boiler water treatment. For facilities and operations engineers, the priorities are generally performance, reliability, and total cost of ownership over the life of the system. We can assist with all of these..
Filtration is one of four essentials
Kinetico frames complete commercial water management around four essentials. Filtration is the foundation, but most facilities need more than one working together. This section is intentionally brief because each essential has a dedicated page:
- Filtration. Removes sediment, turbidity, chemicals, and emerging contaminants. Learn More
- Softening. Removes hardness and dissolved metals that create energy-robbing scale and under-deposit corrosion. High-efficiency, twin-tank, non-electric softeners are the hallmark product here. Learn More
- Purification (reverse osmosis). Removes contaminants at the molecular level, for the whole facility or at specific points of use. Learn More
- Sanitization. Commercial-grade UV disinfection to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms — including cooling towers, open process loops, chilled water loops, and storage tanks. Luminor UV systems handle 8 to 625 gallons per minute, chemical-free, which reduces biocide dependency. Learn More
Designing these together, rather than bolting them on later, produces a system that performs optimally and lasts longer.
Built for your industry
The fundamentals are the same across sectors, but the priorities shift by application. Kinetico Advanced Water Systems has commercial water experience across healthcare and laboratories, manufacturing, food and beverage, hospitality and restaurants, commercial properties, and utilities. Rather than repeat each here, the industry pages cover the specifics:
- Manufacturing: protect process equipment, reduce downtime, hold production consistency. Learn More
- Food and beverage: protect boilers, steamers, and process lines, and support consistent product quality across brewing, food processing, and coffee applications. Learn More
- All industries served: Learn More

Common questions from specifying engineers
How do I know whether I need filtration, softening, or both? Filtration addresses particulate, chemical, and emerging contaminants. Softening addresses hardness and dissolved metals that form scale. Most facilities on municipal supply or well water need both, staged in sequence. The water analysis determines which, and in what order.
What has to come before reverse osmosis? Sediment and chemical filtration, at minimum. Chlorine and chloramine damage RO membranes, so carbon filtration upstream isn’t optional — it protects the largest capital item in the train. Water softeners often pay for themselves in the long run by extending the life of the RO membranes and associated equipment.
How is a commercial system sized? Against peak flow demand, not average, plus contaminant load, industry water-quality requirements, and available footprint. Sizing from a catalog flow rating without a water analysis is how systems fail in year two.
Can filtration remove PFAS and GenX? Specialty filtration media can be selected and rated for specific emerging compounds. Confirm the media is rated for your target compound at your measured concentration — a general PFAS claim isn’t the same as a verified reduction rating for the compound in your water.
What maintenance does a commercial system require? Kinetico commercial filtration backwashes in clean, treated water on usage-based metering rather than a fixed timer, which reduces manual intervention. Ongoing service is handled through a maintenance agreement and varies depending on application, water quality, environment, and industry.
